If you lose a game of tennis 6-0, you could consider yourself dominated in the match: you're at the mercy of a superior power, in this case your opponent.

A child might feel dominated by his parents, but really they just want to make sure he's safe. The word comes from the Latin word dominus which means "Lord." If you are dominated by someone, it is like they are the lord and you are the servant.
