  3. arresting

We all know the word arrest in the legal sense. But when you understand that it comes from the French arrêter, meaning "to stop," then you can use it to describe a work of art or anything else that stops you in your tracks, demanding your attention.
  4. captivating
attracting and holding interest as if by a spell
“In addition to being quite social, however, you appear to be a gifted artist. Your portraits are”—she paused, rotating the drawing—“captivating. They show a depth of emotion well beyond your years.” Between Shades of Gray
Like arrest above, if something captures your attention, figuratively holding you captive, that's a captivating book, movie, or event.
  5. compelling
tending to persuade by forcefulness of argument
I scrolled through my endless TV options, none of them particularly compelling, until I heard Davis’s knock—soft and unsteady—on the door. Turtles All the Way Down
To compel someone is to force them, so a compelling speech or novel inspires you to take action.

The box delivered to my door, artfully decorated with colorful flowers and strange creatures, is curious enough. Los Angeles Times (Jul 21, 2020)

  9. enthralling
able to capture and hold one's interest or attention
Eden Seifu’s debut solo show took place at Deli Gallery in Brooklyn earlier this fall, and it was enthralling. New York Times (Dec 16, 2020)
A thrall was a servant or a slave. So, like captivate, an enthralling book or movie holds you prisoner — figuratively —until the story ends.

Ho says he found it fascinating to watch his colleagues at work when he got to see a cut of the movie. Washington Post (Jul 22, 2020)
  11. incisive

  12. intriguing
capable of arousing interest or curiosity
I’d tell them documentaries use lots of techniques from other films, so are more intriguing and entertaining than one would think. The Guardian (Jul 26, 2020)

She also didn’t style her hair in a flapper bob, but instead let her long, black hair flow over her back, revealing her striking face, with its high cheekbones and big brown eyes. Killers of the Flower Moon
  17. trenchant
having keenness and forcefulness and penetration in thought
Mr. Macalister was a clever politician; a concise and trenchant speaker; and a capital parliamentary leader in so far as the House work was concerned. Queensland
Trancher is French for "to cut" — a slice of cake is une tranche — and that's where we get trench from. So a trenchant argument or piece of writing is sharp, cutting through unimportant things: clear, precise, and effective.
