    He’s sitting facing away in the recliner. Melted into it, more like. Some spooky sound in his voice. Like he is not a man, but a wraith.

    “Pops gave me extra melatonin. I slept like a baby up in heaven on a cotton cloud.”

    having your attention fixated as though witchcraft
    He’s working without paying us any attention. But we’re transfixed, and I don’t know why.
  9. imminent
    close in time; about to occur
    Big Time says, “I got hit with a baseball,” to head off the imminent question.
  10. carabiner

    He walks beside me, his keys jingling on a carabiner hooked through one of his belt loops.
  11. belligerent
    characteristic of an enemy or one eager to fight
    I scuff my cleats on the ground. Already, that belligerent part of me is dying down.

    in a state of decay, ruin, or deterioration
    The main thing on Pops’ mind, with his son taken into state custody, was the
    status of a dilapidated baseball field in the middle of nowhere with his name on it.
  13. liminal
    having the nature of a transitional space, phase, or experience
    Whole thing gives me the creeps. A liminal space. A peek into a world where I do not belong.
  14. malevolence
    the quality of threatening evil
    And the smile on his mouth don’t touch those eyes. Nothin’ in those grimy marbles but malevolence.
  15. trajectory
    a progression or course of events, actions, or developments
    The trajectory of my life is forever altered.
